A63 Castle Street overnight closures to progress key phases of work

A63 Castle Street overnight closures to progress key phases of work

Work continues on the new underpass

With strong progress made on the new underpass at Mytongate Junction in recent months, the next phases of work will require closures east and westbound, for up to eight weeks.

The work is being carried out overnight to limit disruption, starting from Monday 18 November.

This next planned phase comes after successful completion of work at Market Place to rebuild the slip roads at both sides of the junction at Queen Street and Market Place and create a central island.

The new underpass structure is now fully excavated - a major milestone for the project. The next challenge for the team is to lay the concrete slab to form the base of the underpass.

The work from November through to the end of January will include reconfiguring some of the traffic layout, installation of new barriers, work on the road surfaces, and specialist work in the underpass. Some of the work will require a crane positioned in the carriageway, which means overnight closures are essential.

National Highways Project Manager Michael Upshon, said:

“We’re planning a series of overnight closures, which will allow us to carry out a number of key phases of work. The next steps are to complete essential works on the junction and slip roads at Mytongate, as we continue to progress work to create the split-level junction.

“We’re working to avoid the main Christmas period, pausing work on Thursday 19 December and will restart on Monday 6 January.

“For most of the overnight work we will close later than normal, instead of 8pm we will close at 9:30pm.

“We are mindful of other schemes in the area and have been working to coordinate phases of work, closures and diversion routes to minimise the impact for people travelling into the city.

“We would strongly advise people travelling in the area during overnight closures to plan ahead, allowing extra time for their journeys and to follow the signposted diversions.”

The A63 will be closed from Daltry Street to Roger Millward Way in both directions.

Diversion

A fully signed diversion will be in place via the A15, A164, A1079 and A1033 for eastbound traffic, and vice versa for westbound.

Work will continue throughout on the A63 essential safety maintenance scheme between South Cave and North Ferriby, where National Highways is replacing safety barriers and upgrading the lighting. The two project teams have been working closely with each other and the local authorities to manage the impact to road users.

Overnight closures of the A63 between North Cave North Ferriby will continue in one direction, alternating between east and westbound, with a lane closure on the opposite side.

National Highways Project Manager for the maintenance scheme, Simon Taylor, said:

“Work to replace the life-expired safety barriers and upgrade the street lighting is progressing well. We are currently on programme and expect to complete the work in April 2025. Work will continue over the next few months on the below ground infrastructure and installing the new barriers.

“As work progresses, we will be looking to reduce the extents of the 40mph speed restriction where we can do this safely.

“Drivers are advised that the diversion routes for the two closures will be combined into a single route for traffic between Howden (M62 Junction 37) and Hull. We would advise all road users that this route will provide the quickest way of travelling between these points.

“Local roads are not suitable for large goods vehicles, with weight limits in place, and we ask that drivers do not seek to take routes through the local villages.”

On key dates when work on the A63 Castle Street project is taking place alongside the A63 safety barrier and lighting renewal scheme, a wider overnight diversion route will be in place. This route will direct drivers via the A614, A1079 and A1033 for eastbound traffic, and vice versa for westbound. Additional signs will be placed around the A1079/A164 junction to advise the route to be followed.
