Northern Powerhouse – Vertual Ltd.
FORGET the hype, virtual and augmented reality is the new norm for medical training and Hull based
company, Vertual Ltd. under the leadership of CEO, Debra Leeves is leading the way to becoming the world’s leading supplier of 3D virtual reality systems, designed for training and education in radiation therapy and oncology.
Using the latest 3D technology, VERT™ systems provide highly realistic simulations of radiotherapy
equipment enabling the next generation of healthcare professionals to practice and perfect their
skills in a safe simulated environment away from the patient.
From humble beginnings in 2007 as a research partnership between the University of Hull and the
local NHS Trust, Vertual has grown to become a successful international business selling VERT™
systems to hospitals and universities in over 30 countries across the world. 2019 was Vertual’s most
successful year, expanding its operations in Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe and South America.
VR/AR simulators provide a great way to teach and train surgeons, radiographers, dentists and other
medical professionals offering a higher level of training in this area. Simulators provide an
opportunity to be fully immersed in a situation that is nearly identical to a real situation without any
risk to the patient.
Following Vertual’s success as the go-to system for teaching radiation therapists
and physicists, the company is investing in R&D and will launch its new product Compact VERT this
year, marking the start of a pipeline of product launches in the VR/AR training sector.
We don’t yet know the full capabilities of VR/AR, as with any new phenomena it will continue to be
refined as we discover more. But, over the coming years , this technology will emerge from niche to
mainstream. Vertual is well positioned to stake its claim to being a central part of mainstream
medical training.
