Popular tutor shortlisted in International Finance Awards

Popular tutor shortlisted in International Finance Awards

Di Garbera with Vic Golding, the MD of Goldings.

DI Garbera, of Golding Computer Services, based in Hull, has been shortlisted for Tutor of the Year 2018 by her students at the International Association of Bookkeepers’ (IAB) Awards.

Di joined Goldings in 1986 as the first employee in a business founded by Vic Golding four years earlier. Her job was to look after the office while Vic visited clients, but with a good finance background from her time with the NHS and then at a large secondary school, she found she had much more to offer.

Di set up the company’s finance system, which she later computerised. Then, with the company supplying businesses with their first computers and finance software, she became involved in the training programmes devised to help clients get the most out of their purchases.

Di said: “Customers got to know me and wanted me to train them because I had the business experience of manual bookkeeping and I knew the products. That’s how it started. I went on a lot of Sage courses and was taught by other experts, and every year I still do an exam so I am always up to date with the latest programs and features.”

Di works closely with organisations which help young people who are trying to get into business. She is a board member of the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank (JCYEB) and is a mentor for Making Changes for Careers (MC4C), a scheme set up to help young people who are not in employment, education or training.

She said: “Both projects are brilliant for young people, giving them a taste of business. Even if they decide not to run their own business, they gain experience, confidence and employability skills, which helps them in their careers. They decided they wanted to include a finance element in their courses and help learners achieve a Level 1 qualification. I provide the training free of charge as part of the mentor programme.”

The IAB Awards Ceremony is held on 6th December at Westminster Palace and is hosted by Fabian Hamilton MP.

The categories for 2018 are:

IAB Bookkeeper of the Year sponsored by Lloyds Banking Group

IAB Accountant of the Year sponsored by FA Simms and AMLCC

IAB Payroll Professional of the Year sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP)

IAB Small Business Mentor of the Year sponsored by SFEDI Group

IAB Student of the Year

IAB Tutor of the Year

The IAB is a membership organisation providing support and services to bookkeepers, accountants and finance professionals including Ofqual regulated qualifications and anti-money laundering supervision.
