British Steel bolsters workforce with 18 new trainees

British Steel’s 18 new manufacturing trainees pictured on their first day at the Scunthorpe plant.

BRITISH Steel’s Scunthorpe workforce has been bolstered by fresh talent after the company recruited 18 trainees in brand new roles.

Our latest intake of recruits started this week as Manufacturing Trainees - first-of-its-kind positions designed to develop the next generation of steelworkers. Two more manufacturing trainees will join us shortly.

Training – to be performed in partnership with North Lindsey College - will see the apprentices complete a level 3 qualification in Metal Allied Processing. They will also learn practical skills around the steel and iron making processes including how to operate mobile plant and machinery.

British Steel has always invested in trainees, whether they are graduates, apprentices or students taking part in placements and work experience. We now have more than 200 people occupying such positions throughout the business.

Paul Martin, British Steel Managing Director, said: “We’re very proud to welcome our new Manufacturing Trainees to our Scunthorpe site.

“This is the first time we’ve recruited for manufacturing trainees in about 15 years, and we’ve done so because we felt this was the perfect time to strengthen our manufacturing workforce as we look towards the future.

“Our highly skilled employees will give the very best training, in partnership with North Lindsey College. And our new trainees have all the attributes to become the future of steel manufacturing in Scunthorpe and continue our proud heritage.”

British Steel’s new trainees will be based in manufacturing areas across the company’s Scunthorpe site and will be directly involved in our annual 2.8 million tonne steel output.

North Lindsey College Principal Anne Tyrell said: “We are delighted to be helping British Steel as these trainees embark on their new careers.

“This is a superb opportunity for them and we will ensure they have all the skills needed to excel in their positions and help British Steel go from strength to strength.”

Among the new trainees who have joined British Steel is Brenton Cummings, 32, who lives in Scunthorpe.
He said: “I was over the moon to get this position. I wanted somewhere where I could get training and progress, and the sky’s the limit here.

“I’ve been looking for a while and had been working in an agency.  My father-in-law used to work here and I know a few people who work here, it’s definitely a good company to work for.”

Another of our new starters, Liam Sarsfield, 20, from Scunthorpe, said: “This is definitely a strong company going forward.

“I obviously knew about it being bought out and think it’s got a bright future ahead of it. I thought it was a good opportunity and somewhere I’d have a long career. ”
