Hull Truck Theatre in search for business people to join board of trustees

Hull Truck Theatre in search for business people to join board of trustees

Alan Dix, Chair of the Board, Hull Truck Theatre

ONE of the region’s leading independent theatres is aiming to boost the business expertise among its cast of trustees as it prepares for a programme of 50th anniversary celebrations.

Hull Truck Theatre is putting out a call to people with excellent local or regional business networks for volunteers who can bring diverse voices and skills to an organisation which is working to raise awareness of its wider community role.

Alan Dix, Chair of the board, said: “Hull Truck Theatre is much more than a company that puts plays on stages. We employ approximately 30 people on an ongoing basis, work with hundreds of freelancers, run projects and programmes with communities across Hull and are an important part of the cultural landscape of the north.

“The trustees are there to make sure the company sticks to its principles, is well run and operates in ways that are safe, honest and responsible.  It has a mix of people from all sorts of backgrounds who bring a variety of perspectives and we want more of that – especially if you have skills and life experiences that will provide a new point of view or have a voice that is not often listened to.”

The company is especially looking for individuals with strategic HR experience, leaders in digital innovation and those who live or work in the HU3 and HU6 postcode areas.

Pat Coyle, Director of Marketing and Client Relations at Rollits LLP, joined the board in 2018 and says individuals can benefit from getting involved.

Pat said: “I have always been a big fan of Hull Truck. I used to go and watch performances in the previous premises and I followed the progress over the years. I hadn’t really thought about joining the board but they were keen to get people from business involved.

“It gives insight into things you wouldn’t think about otherwise – it’s not just about putting on productions, there’s the extensive work the company does in the community and the way it has faced up to the challenges of Covid during the last 18 months.

“Hull Truck is one of our crown jewels but a lot of people underestimate the contribution it makes to the city and the region, particularly in terms of reaching out to disadvantaged areas and local community groups.

“Even before Covid the company was live-streaming performances into care homes and hospitals and looking at new ways to engage with hard-to-reach groups. In that it is no different from any other business and it recognises the importance of having a diverse range of people involved.

“Getting involved is also a great way for young people to give something back and to learn and develop. During 2018 and 2019 we built on the success of UK City of Culture year – then Covid came along and everything changed. But next year is the 50th anniversary so this is a very exciting time to get involved. Hull Truck Theatre needs people who will think outside the box, roll up their sleeves, contribute and challenge.”

Candidates are invited to apply by sending a letter, CV or video or audio message to recruitment@hulltruck.co.uk

The closing date is Thursday 9 September and interviews are likely to take place during week commencing Monday 20 September.
