Regeneration works to resume in Cleethorpes

Regeneration works to resume in Cleethorpes

Regeneration work restarts on Alexandra Road, Cleethorpes.

REGENERATION works on Alexandra Road in Cleethorpes have resumed today having been temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis.

With all safety and hygiene measures followed, this restart will allow work to carry on with less disruption as lockdown restrictions are preventing the usual resort activity.

Repaving with York stone, supported by monies from the Coastal Communities Fund, was completed along the Pier Gardens side of Alexandra Road as the main lockdown set in.

That same work will now take place on part of the retail side of the street for ten weeks from Monday, April 27. The programme of works, which will end with the full resurfacing of Alexandra Road from Sea Road to Knoll Street, is expected to be complete by 3 July.

Welcoming this restart North East Lincolnshire Council’s Deputy Leader and regeneration lead, Cllr John Fenty said: Following detailed discussions with our contractor, PBS, about site safety, we’ve taken the tough decision to take advantage of the current lockdown situation and proceed with the next phase of works to the retail side of Alexandra Road. We know how disruptive highway works can be for businesses, but we hope, by doing the works now, we are doing what we can to get them out of the way quickly and support businesses to take advantage of the season as soon as social distancing restrictions are relaxed.”

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, these improvements will initially see the kerb line outside the shops and retail outlets in two areas, between Albert Road and Sea Road and between Yarra Road and the Baptish Church, replaced. This will be followed by the replacement of the kerb line and paving between Knoll Street and the Baptist Church, and the section outside the library. Parking restrictions will only be in place outside these areas while the work is ongoing to replace the kerbs.

Paving in which the Victorian balconies sit is being avoided as planning and investigative work continues, to determine the extent of the conservation and restoration requirements for the balconies.

To ensure safe working areas, the one-way traffic system that was operating prior to lockdown will be re-instated. This allows traffic to flow southbound only along Alexandra Road between Sea Road and Knoll Street - towards Knoll Street.

Northbound traffic is diverted down Knoll Street (there will no right turn into Knoll Street from southbound traffic or left turn out), Cambridge Street and St Peter’s Avenue.  There is no exit from Dolphin Street onto Alexandra Road. Traffic will only be able to turn right out of Yarra Road and the Civic Offices onto Alexandra Road. Traffic will not be permitted to turn into Yarra Road from Alexandra Road.

Albert Road will be made one way from St Peter’s Avenue to Alexandra Road, which will be permanent once work is complete, and there will be no left turn out of Albert Road onto Alexandra Road.

During the works, parking will be available on the Pier Gardens side of the road, and also on the retail side of the works when the kerbs have been completed.

“Over the last few years, we have been incredibly successful in winning vital grant funding for large elements of work in various locations across Cleethorpes. We are fortunate to have this opportunity and we are confident that, in the coming years, we will reap the benefits in terms of increased visitor numbers and trade. This, of course, benefits the whole of North East Lincolnshire,” added Cllr Fenty.
